The Gold Coast's latest mass transit system, the light rail stage 3, has finally opened to the public after a lengthy and costly construction process. This project, which cost $1.55 billion and took four years, has sparked both excitement and controversy among locals and businesses. The construction process has been disruptive for many businesses along the route, with some even relocating to avoid the impact. The original plan included stage 4, which would have connected Burleigh Heads to the airport, but local opposition and the potential for gentrification led to its cancellation. The LNP government cited local opposition and an estimated cost of $5.7 billion to $9.8 billion for stage 4, but Labor senator Murray Watt argued that the state had not provided a firm business case, making it impossible to determine the exact cost. The future of the light rail project remains uncertain, with a network of larger buses, dubbed the "GC Surfer," set to carry passengers south of Burleigh Heads without dedicated lanes to bypass traffic.
